The financial crisis, what can we/ I do?

So far this week I have had 23 conversations with various people about the cost of living crisis. This will effect more people than any previous recession, it’s really scary. What can we do to look after our mental health through these exceedingly difficult times?

1) Eat well- Plan your meals, think about making things from scratch (it is cheaper), using a slow cooker is apparently cheaper. If you are peeling potatoes, save the skins for the next meal, batch cook and freeze some, making soup is easy and a cheap way to fill up, you can make large amounts and take it to work for lunch. It’s a great way to get some fibre in too, and some much needed nutrients. Try not to waste anything, you’ll be helping the environment too.

2) Exercise- try to continue to get your daily exercise, get out in the fresh air, walking at any speed is a great all round exercise and it’s free. Exercise boosts us, giving energy, positive feelings and it’s good for the body.

3) Community- come together, many of us will be thinking about how we can save on our heating bills as the cold weather draws closer. If you are lucky enough to have a fire, come together as a family in the one room, either way, do that, switch off your radiators in all you other rooms and just use the one, communicate, play board games, do a jigsaw, communicate. Remember how much we valued lockdown for family time, think of this as another opportunity for that.

Think about your neighbours, particularly elderly people. What if they need? Could you check in m a he sure they have blankets, food and water???

4) Looking after your mental health and saving money… you’ll have heard of the benefits of cold water therapy, great for increasing your bodies threshold to anxiety… why not start cold showers, it will support your immune system, boost your energy and won’t cost you, putting on the boiler. Maybe make it a family competition who can manage the longest.

Try to be in the moment as much as you can, that way we can’t worry about the future that hasn’t yet arrived. I am simply prepping week to week, of course with some of my work I have to prep longer in advance but some of it I am able to be much more in the moment. Do some Breath-work/ some EFT tapping/ some mindfulness. There’s loads of free stuff out there. Stay tuned here, for my YouTube channel, coming soon with regular top tips and helpful sessions.
