Overview This session is designed to deepen understanding of borderline 
personality disorder (BPD) through a compassionate lens. By exploring real-life case studies and client outcomes, attendees will gain insights into the lived experiences of individuals managing these symptoms. The session offers a practical, step-by-step guide through each phase of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) treatment, using clinical examples to enhance understanding. Updated based on participant feedback, the session now includes discussions on diagnostic overshadowing, broadening it’s relevance across diverse clinical presentations. This 3 hour session provides condensed, impactful learning, drawn from an extended 7.5 hour material set, offering efficiency without compromising depth.

Facilitator Kate Chartres is an EMDR Consultant with extensive experience in 
Liaison Psychiatry. Her work spans hospital settings, accident and emergency-departments, and outpatient care, focusing on clients navigating self-harm and suicide recovery. Now in private practice, Kate serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer for London City University’s Liaison Mental Health module aand has delivered dynamic , skills based training at Sunderland University. Kate specializes in emotion dysregulation and complex trauma including body based symptoms supporting individuals who face systemic barriers within healthcare services. Kates engaging teaching style and use of clinical examples allows her to make the complex accessible and actionable for diverse audiences.

Aims and Objectives 

  1. Expand knowledge of emotional dysregulation development and diagnostic frameworks, utilising DBT and AIP principles.

  2. Build empathy by understanding the lived experiences of individuals with BPD.

  3. Highlight the critical role of validation for this client group.

  4. Explore how trauma - including trauma associated with healthcare experiences shapes an individuals mental health.

  5. Apply a trauma-informed framework that integrates the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model in preparation for EMDR.

  6. Develop practical skills for EMDR, focussing on preparation and tailored approaches for desensitization and processing, aligned with the 8-phase protocol.

  7. The session aims to create a respectful and inclusive space for clinicians, practitioners, and others seeking to enhance their skills in working with diverse client groups, including those from underserved and marginalized communities.
