Filling that EMDR consultant form!
As I complete my EMDR consultant accreditation form I am reflecting on all the people I have had the privilege to work with. It’s been 8 years or so since I finally embarked on EMDR training. I have probably done more than a 1000 sessions with well over 100 people and each unique. What I have learned is that the brain and memory network is complex, things are rarely stored in a linear way. Trauma of any kind is stored in such a physical way; the release of blocked events does far more for a person than reduce symptoms of anxiety/ depression/ PTSD, it allows them to be free in so many other ways.
I am constantly amazed by the resilience of people, the horrors many have experienced in life and loss, the ways they find to keep going and how EMDR seems to be able to treat at a much deeper level than other standard therapies. We have to remember that people are not just a product of their thoughts, they are a product of their experience in a multi sensory way, sights/ sounds/ smells (especially smells)/ emotions and physical sensations.
I am so lucky to do the work that I do, guiding people back to health in multifaceted ways. Once I achieve my goal of gaining consultant accreditation I will continue to clinically supervise others; supporting them to experience the magic of delivering EMDR to others.
I guess I will need a new goal/ aspiration I think it will be simple.
1) To continue to work with people with any mental health concern.
2) To look after my own mental health and physical well-being by maintaining a healthy work/ life balance.
3) To continue to learn and develop with every single contact.
